6 Social Media Strategy Tips Your Crowdfunding Campaign Needs

gogo factor

You already know that without social media your crowdfunding campaign is doomed, so I’m not going to insist in that. Instead, I’m going to reveal the 6 things I always advise my clients to do to leverage the power of social media and attain their crowdfunding goal.

Tip #1: Choose your channels smartly

If your crowdfunding campaign is for a gadget, maybe you should skip Pinterest. But if you’re raising money for a crocheting business, you must definitely add it to the mix. Briefly put: think about your buyer persona and where they “hang out” when online – that’s where you need to be, as well. Forget about being *everywhere* — crowdfunding campaigns have a limited duration and it’s advisable that you don’t waste your time where your audience never hangs out.

Tip #2: Create specific profiles for your crowdfunding campaign

I’ve seen this mistake more times than I can count: people run crowdfunding campaigns using their company’s social media profiles. Of course you can add them to the mix in order to get the people who already love your work to invest in your newest project, but you should also have dedicated channels that speak of nothing else but your product that needs funding.

Tip #3: Create a hashtag for your crowdfunding campaign

This hashtag can be the name of your product or even something longer like #FundingX – but don’t exaggerate with the length; you want to make it as easy as possible for your friends and backers to share your content. The purpose of this hashtag is to give people a sense of community around your crowdfunding campaign.

Tip #4: Create some social media buzz before launching the campaign

Activate your social media profiles a couple of months in advance and be sure to link them to your Kickstarter or Indiegogo page from the very beginning. You could even invest in ads before you launch the campaign so that you already have some fans/followers and potential backers when the big “unveiling” happens.

Tip #5: Engage with your audience

Ask for your fans’ opinion, ask them to share, post comments and give you feedback. And, most importantly, remember to thank them for their involvement. You want to make people feel part of a community, not bombard them with sales pitches three times a day. By the way, you should ask people to back your project in no more than 20% of your posts.

Tip #6: Use social media as an outreach tool

Use your Facebook page to comment or like influencers’ posts in order to gain their attention. On Twitter, tweet directly to influencers and publications – you never know whose interest you spark and get an article on your crowdfunding campaign published at the right time.
