Can You really Hack the Gogo Factor?

indiegogo

If you ever considered launching an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign, then you’ve definitely heard about the Gogo factor. According to Indiegogo themselves, this is “an algorithm that tracks activity – everything from how much gets funded on your campaign page, to promotions, comments and how frequently you update.” — source. This factor is the one that determines if your project will ever be featured on the homepage and thus attract more backers.

Since Indiegogo has a more relaxed system and allows projects to be published far easier than Kickstarter does, the competition to getting on the homepage is quite fierce. Even more, if you don’t manage to get there, odds are your project won’t reach its goal. So, what can you do to get there?

  1. Hit the share button as often as possible.

Shares on social networks are fundamental to boosting your Gogo factor. So do it yourself as often as possible and ask all your friends to do the same. Ignore no social network, they are all important! But what is even more important is to remember to use your custom URL – otherwise the shares won’t count towards your Gogo factor.

  1. Get funds to your campaign as often as possible

This won’t show in any official Indiegogo communications, but projects that have no backers never make it to the homepage. In fact, you should have at least 5% in the first three days after the campaign launch. So make sure to ask EVERYONE you know to contribute to your dream. You should have at least 30% of your goal collected by the end of your first week online. Even the smallest donation counts and it’s ideal that they come from as many people as possible.

  1. Post frequent updates

Show that you are truly involved in this by posting an update every 3 days (ideally) or at least every 5 days. Add new videos, new photos, a thank you note to everyone backing or sharing your project, a new perk and so on. Aside from boosting your Gogo factor, this also helps with keeping your fans informed – each time you post an update they will be announced about it via email.

  1. Get traffic to your campaign

Ask your friends, family and closest fans to visit your page as often as possible and, ideally, from different IPs (for instance, using a coffee shop’s Wi-Fi network is a perfect opportunity for a new visit). Also, remember to ask them to clear their cache before doing so.

  1. Encourage comments and reply to all of them

User-generated content is a gold mine anywhere, but especially on Indiegogo. It shows that people are actually interested in your project and need to know more about it. So, ask your core group of fans to post comments and make sure to leave none unanswered.

  1. […] Kickstarter makes it easier for your product to get noticed since every project has to go through an approval phase. The result? Less projects online, more chances for yours to make the home page or Kickstarter’s newsletter. On Indiegogo, things can get pretty crowded – there is no approval phase, so everyone can post a project. Chances are there will be hundreds of project similar to yours, so spread the word – public relations, social media, friends and family, paid ads, everything counts in getting your project to rank higher.
