4 Types of Clients you should Ditch right now

“Our client is our master”. These are words that most entrepreneurs live by. But, truth be told, if you’ve been in business for more than a year, you must have already found out that not every client is God-sent. In fact, some are so bad that they make you question your entrepreneurial skills and most of your life choices.

What should you be doing in these cases? Put up with them because they give you money and maybe their logo looks great in your portfolio? No! I’m not saying you should ditch them at the first sign of trouble, but there are some limits that you shouldn’t allow anyone to cross. Here are some type of clients that you’re better off without:

The attention seeker

Of course that all clients should be given attention! But some of them demand too much of it. Clients who can’t make up their mind about what they need or change the specs after you’ve given them exactly what they asked for (the third time!) will make you waste your time and kill your productivity. If you’re undecided about whether you should ditch them or not, ask yourself this question: what could get done in the time you spend attending to their ever-changing needs?

The time waster

There is a limited number of hours in a day and, as we all know, time is money – especially for an entrepreneur. If your client needs to be hand-held through every small decision and wants to spend a couple of hours in a conference call with you every day just to make a small decision, then you may be better off without him. There is an exception here: if you can bill them for every minute you spend together, then there is no reason to ditch him.

The free haggler

Clients who always pester you to lower your fees and, if possible, throw in some freebies every week are clients who don’t really value your services. Plus, the money you make is not all that matters: motivation is one of the greatest assets of an entrepreneur and these people with suck it all out of you. Of course, there are exceptions: start-ups and businesses who go through a rough patch may have limited funds, but only for a while. If you stick by them when times are tough, your loyalty may be rewarded.

The late payer

Again, this is a matter of respect: if you meet your deadlines, they should meet theirs, too. No one is mad when a payment is delayed once in a blue moon, but if the situation persists, it may mean that the client does not appreciate your services enough or that they are simply not reliable. Whatever the case, you don’t want to be around people like that.

  1. […] Furthermore, a client that signs with you just because of the price, is not the type of loyal customer that you want around. This client is a bargain chaser and he will ditch you the moment your competitors will offer him a better deal. I wrote more about this and other types of bad clients here. […]
