Social Media Tips for Local Businesses

social media

I heard it time and time again, especially from small business owners: “Nah, social media isn’t for me”. After all, if you have a local business, a great location and some word-of-mouth should suffice to get you all the clients you need, right? WRONG! Your clients (and your competitors!) ARE on social media and foot traffic can get you only so far. Plus, social networks are today’s word-of-mouth carriers, so you need to be there in order to control what words get spread about you. Here’s what to mind first:

  1. Be where your clients are

Engage your customers when they are in your shop or even via an e-mail survey and learn what their preferences are. You may think that Facebook is the Holy Grail for your business, but your clients may be fonder of Twitter or Pinterest. This doesn’t mean you should only be on a single network, just that you should invest more in the one that your clients favor.

  1. Focus on the community

Join local groups on Facebook and local forums (all towns have such an online presence) and show your support for the causes your customers care about. Besides strengthening your local community, you will also have the advantage of letting people know you care about more than your business.

  1. Never ignore Google

Google+ may not have the same traffic that Facebook or Twitter do, but the SEO leverage you gain by being there is unbeatable. Even more, make sure that you have your full and correct data listed in Google Places: address and phone number are of the utmost importance. People can get directions to your shop directly from Google and you don’t want to mislead them.

  1. Post relevant content

Don’t just spam your audience with advertising and your latest promotions; instead, turn your social media profiles into a hub where people can get relevant local information. Talk about charities you support and about local events in between your advertorial posts. And always remember: quality beats quantity, so post only when you have something interesting to say.

  1. Make your audience feel special

Once you’ve setup your accounts and gained some fans or followers, it is time to think about increasing those numbers. The best way to do that is to post sharable content that makes your fans feel like they’re in a select VIP club. For instance, you can offer a coupon code for the next purchase; make sure to specify that the code is only available for Facebook/Twitter/Pinterest/Google+ users. This will entice people to encourage their friends to connect with you via social media, as well.
